Call Remington and give them the serial number, they will tell you when it was born, however keep in mind they due make errors. I am not sure if I would trust the dates, I dated my R870 and Remington dated it as mfg in 1976. I have a 20' 12ga. 870 Wingmaster made in 1979 (according to the serial number). It has been hand etched for the Georgia State Patrol so I suppose that at one time this was a patrol car gun. I got it from a Sporting Goods store here in Oregon back in 1990 when they bought a batch of used shotguns and put them on sale.

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer's rifle.

Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.

They continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box.
They resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01.
